TEMPE, Ariz. - Two first period goals from each team was all that was scored as the Arizona State soccer team (9-8-1, 3-4-1 Pac-10) tied with 23rd-ranked California (11-5-2, 3-3-1 Pac-10), 1-1, this afternoon in front of 569 spectators at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Four of the last five matches for the Sun Devils have ended in overtime.
California struck first in the 24th minute when Jordan Iantorno tallied her first career goal from 25 yards out. She dribbled the ball around then kicked a low line drive the skidded on the ground into the lower left corner pass a diving Kristin Slater.
Arizona State evened the match in the 38th minute from two local products. In a scrambled in front of the goal, freshman Marlina Fletcher (Tempe, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) took a pass from Stacey Tullock (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) from about 5-yards out and kicked it pass California goalkeeper Mallory Moser. The goal by Fletcher was also her first career.
In an every even match, that was all both teams could score in regulation or in two overtime frames. Each team made several rushes in overtime, but each was turned back by good defensive plays and goalkeeping. ASU's Slater made six saves while Cal's Moser saved three.
Up next, Arizona State travels to Tucson for the final match of the regular season against the University of Arizona on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m.
