TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior Cian Carvalho turned in her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough as the 21st-ranked Sun Devil women's basketball team lost to Loyola Marymount 70-63 Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Loyola Marymount senior Bryn Britton led all scorers with 22 points, while ASU senior Amanda Levens turned in her second 20-point outing of the year with 20 points and six assists. Carvalho finished the game with 13 points and tied her career high with 10 rebounds.
The LMU Lions made their move midway through the first half, going on a 9-0 that started when sophomore Raelen Self drilled a three-pointer with 8:41 to play in the half to tie the game at 19. LMU took a 30-25 lead into the locker room at halftime and outshot the Sun Devils 45.2 to 25.0 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Loyola Marymount went ahead by as many as 16 points, but the Sun Devils mounted a comeback midway through the half and got as close as one when Levens hit a pair of free throws to make it 56-55 with 5:37 to play. The Lions, however, scored the next four points and ASU never got closer than five for the rest of the game.
Arizona State, now 2-1 on the year, returns to action this weekend at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, taking on Western Michigan, Kansas State and Richmond on Nov. 24-26.
