A Second Half To Remember: Battling back and forth, ASU overcame a 24-10 halftime deficit to eventually take a 25-24 lead after Jeff Krohn and Shaun McDonald connected on a 33-yard touchdown. Willie Hurst and the Washington Huskies countered with a 6-play, 74-yard drive to end the third quarter and give the Huskies a 30-25 lead. ASU came right back after a defensive stand with a 5-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 1-yard Delvon Flowers scamper to give the Devils a 31-30 lead. A 30-yard field goal by John Anderson as time expired gave the Huskies a 33-31 win.
The Huskies Did It Again: Of Washington's 24 wins under current head coach Rick Neuheisel, the Huskies have had to come from behind in the fourth quarter for a win 18 times. Scoring on a TD run last week vs. Arizona to gain a 31-28 win in the closing seconds, UW did it once again this week with John Anderson's second "walk-off" field goal of the year. Now 6-1 on the year and 4-1 in Pac-10 play, five of UW's six wins have been fourth-quarter comebacks... in the 31 games under Neuheisel, 19 of those games have come down to the wire, being decided by seven points or fewer... UW is 15-4 and has won 11 in a row in games that are decided by less than seven points.
Krohn Moves Claims In Single Season Touchdown Passes: With his 23-yard TD pass to tight end Mike Pinkard in the second quarter and his 23-yard TD to Shaun McDonald,, Krohn completed his 17th and 18th touchdown pass of the year... with that total, the sophomore starting QB moves into eighth place in the ASU single-season record books, passing Jake Plummer (1995), Paul Justin (1989) and Jeff Van Raaphorst (1986) who all completed 17 TD passes in a season. Krohn finished the night completing 17 of 29 passes for 320 yards and two TD's.
McDonald's Nine TD Receptions Is Fifth In Single-Season ASU History: With his 23-yard TD reception from Jeff Krohn in the third quarter, sophomore wide receiver Shaun McDonald jumped into the ASU record books with his ninth (9) receiving touchdown of the year. McDonald, who caught four (4) vs. San Jose State earlier in the year, tied Morris Owens (1973) in the record books. With four games remaining in the 2001 regular season, McDonald has a chance to overcome the school record of 14 set by John Allen in 1984. Former Devils Keith Poole (1996) and J.D. Hill (1970) are currently in tied for third place in ASU single-season history. McDonald finished the game with nine (9) catches for 194 yards with a long of 43, logging his third 100-yard receiving game of the year and the fourth of his career. For the season, McDonald now has 31 receptions for 696 yards and nine touchdowns.
The All-Time Series: With the come-from-behind win, the Washington Huskies improved to 15-8 in the all-time series with the Sun Devils... UW has now won nine of the last 12 meetings. With the win, the Huskies improved to 7-6 all-time in Tempe, including two straight at Sun Devil Stadium.
The Last Time Beating a Ranked Opponent... Eludes ASU: With the 33-31 loss to the 13th-ranked Huskies, ASU missed out on beating its first ranked opponent since handing then No. 10 Washington State a 44-31 loss on Nov. 1, 1997 at Sun Devil Stadium.
Sun Devil Notes:Mike Pinkard's (Thornton, Colo.) 23-yard TD reception in the second quarter was the first of his ASU career... the 1-yard TD run by senior Delvon Flowers in the fourth quarter was his fourth of the year and third in the last two games... Flowers led ASU with 64 rushing yards on 19 carries... the last time ASU recorded a safety, was against the Huskies last year in Tempe (Oct. 14, 2000)... senior punter and Ray Guy Award candidate Nick Murphy had a good game for the Devils, having his four punts total 168 yards for a 42.0 average and a long of 52... reigning defensive Pac-10 Player of the Week Alfred Williams intercepted his second pass of the year and the third of his career in the first quarter... Williams recorded six total tackles in the game and one for a loss.
Washington Husky Notes: Senior wide receiver Todd Elstrom (Puyallup, Wash.) hauled in his fourth TD of 2001 and ninth of his career with the 3-yard reception from Cody Pickett in the first quarter... Elstrom finished the game with six (6) catches for 52 yards... junior wide receiver Paul Arnold (Seattle, Wash) continues to excel at his converted position after playing his first two years at tailback... Arnold caught seven (7) passes for team-high 94 yards vs. the Sun Devils and for the season now has 470 receiving yards on the season... the second quarter interception by Anthony Kelley (Altadena, Calif.) was the first of his career... UW extended its streak of games without a shutout to 236 games, including a string of 158 straight Pac-10 games... senior tailback Willie Hurst (Compton, Calif.) led the Huskies in rushing this season for the second time, recording his second 100-yard game of the year with 185 yards on 21 rushes... UW is now 12-3 since 1990 against first-year head coaches.
