Final Stats

TEMPE, Ariz. --Sweeping the top-three spots in six events, including the top-four spots in the 50-yard and 100y freestyle, Arizona State's men's swimming and diving team opened the 2001-02 season with a 193-101 victory over the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Friday night.

Sophomore Nick Brunelli won both sprint free events. In the 50y free, Brunelli touched the wall first in 20.62, ahead of three teammates, senior Simon MacDonald (20.89), sophomore Mark Hill (20.90) and junior Justin Mathias (21.34). In the 100y free, Brunelli swam 45.65 for the win, followed by Mathias (46.36), Hill (46.53) and sophomore Federico Martin (47.54).

Sophomore Ahmed Hussein was also a two-event winner. His 50.12 effort in the 100y backstroke led the way for a top-three sweep with the help of junior Christian Harcas (51.56) and Martin (54.04). In the 200y back, Hussein swam 1:47.70 for first with Harcsas again taking second (1:51.86) and senior Bo West taking third (1:52.19).

The other two events to see ASU sweep the top-three spots were the 200-yard free and the 200y butterfly. Senior Gavin Meadows was the leader in the 200y free with an effort of 1:39.38, as junior Anders Lyrbring (1:40.27) and West (1:40.44) finished second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Rich Jacobs (1:52.46), junior Ace Tate (1:54.57) and sophomore Jonathan Shaw (1:55.15) finished one-two-three in the 200y fly.

In the 500y free, Meadows earned a second win (4:33.25), while sophomore Adam Bugledich (200 individual medley, 1:52.92) and freshman Thomas McCrummen (1-meter springboard, 312.82) also picked up first-place points for ASU.

Both relays also went in ASU's favor, starting with the 200y medley relay (1:32.20) and finishing with the 200y free relay (1:21.87).

Sun Devil swimmers will be in action Friday, October 26, at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz., with the intrasquad ASU Pentathlon at 3:00 p.m.
