Unable to hold a 2-1 lead after the first half, the Arizona State soccer team (6-6, 0-2 Pac-10) fell to second-ranked UCLA (11-0, 2-0), 3-2, this afternoon in Los Angeles. Despite being out shot 32-2, ASU's two shots turned into goals as the Sun Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. However, three unanswered goals for the Bruins proved costly, as they had to come from behind for the first time this year. The two goals allowed on Sunday by the Bruins were also the most they had given up this season.
Senior Antoinette Marjanovic, a native of Los Angeles, put the Sun Devils ahead 1-0 a little over eight minutes into the match when she launched a shot from about 25 yards out, beating UCLA goalkeeper CiCi Peterson into the top of the net. It was Marjanovic's first goal of the year and 20th of her career. ASU took a 2-0 lead at the 26:39 mark when forward Stephanie Peel slipped behind the Bruin defense to chip a ball over Peterson from around the top of the box.
The Bruins scored their first goal in the 30th minute of the match when forward Mary-Frances Monroe grabbed up a loose ball in the middle of the ASU box to make the score 2-1.
Following a 2-1 ASU halftime lead, UCLA evened the match in the 50th minute of play when Bruin freshman Kendal Billingsley blasted a hard shot from about 18 yards out into the left corner of the ASU net.
Bruin forward Stephanie Rigamat scored the game-winning goal for UCLA at the 77:26 mark when she took a poor ASU clearance at the top of the box, hitting the shot from about 15 yards out.
Senior goalkeeper Kristin Slater went the distance, making seven saves.
Up next, Arizona State returns home to host Oregon State on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. and Oregon on Sunday, October 21 at 11:30 a.m.
