For the third consecutive match, the Arizona State soccer team (6-5, 0-1 Pac-10) were edged by one goal, this time a 3-2 decision to USC (6-3-1, 1-0 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 opener for both schools at McAlister Field in Los Angeles.

USC's Shannon Cross scored the game-winner on a penalty kick. Cross scored the penalty kick at 81:45 after Jackie Fodor was taken down in the penalty box. Arizona State had tied the game three minutes earlier on a broken play when Patrice Feulner lifted a shot from 10 yards over goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes' head. It was Feulner's team-high ninth goal.

The Sun Devils took the initial lead on Stacey Tullock's fifth goal of the season at 16:50. She received a pass from Feulner, got around Fernandes from 25 yards out and knocked the ball into the empty net. The Trojans would answer quickly at 18:17 with their own tally after knocking in a loose ball in traffic

USC took the 2-1 lead into halftime at 29:42. On a free kick by Ali Fennell, the ball bounced off a Sun Devil defender to sophomore defender Amanda Roach. Roach pushed a short pass to Casas for the shot. During the action on Casas' goal, ASU goalkeeper Kristin Slater received a cut over her eye and was replaced by Kelly Fitzgerald.

Up next, Arizona State will stay in Los Angeles to face second-ranked UCLA on Sunday at 12:00 noon.
