LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Sophomore Jimin Kang shot a five-under 67 Wednesday to garner her first career tournament victory at the Price's "Give 'em Five" New Mexico State Intercollegiate, held Mon.-Wed., Oct. 8-10 at the par 72, 6,119-yard University Golf Course.
Kang finished at 11-under 205 (67-74-67) to win individual medalist honors and best second-place finisher Lisa Meldrum of Oklahoma by eight strokes. She becomes the first Sun Devil to win a tournament since Miriam Nagl captured medalist honors at the 2000 NCAA West Regional.
As a team, the seventh-ranked Sun Devils finished in a tie for first with Baylor with a six-over par total of 870 for the three rounds but fell to the Bears in a one-hole tiebreaker. Oklahoma finished third with a three-round total of 881, while New Mexico State (884) and UCLA (891) rounded out the top five.
In addition to Kang, three other Sun Devils finished in the top 20. Junior Blair O'Neal turned in her second top-10 showing of the season, shooting a career-best 69 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for sixth at two-over par 218 (76-73-69). Freshman Erin Tone, who played in the tournament as an individual, tied for 15th at eight-over 224 (74-77-73), while fellow freshman Josefin Gustafsson finished in a tie for 18th at 225 (73-75-77). Junior Ga?lle Truet tied for 33rd at 13-over 229 (71-80-78), while senior Lisa Meredith withdrew from the third round.
The Sun Devils return to action next week at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate, which will be held Oct. 19-21 at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
