AUBURN, Wash. - Led by junior Blair O'Neal, the Arizona State women's golf team shot an 11-over par 299 Monday to open the season in fourth place after the first round of the NCAA Fall Preview, being held Mon.-Wed., Sept. 24-26 at the Washington National Golf Club. The 54-hole event, which is being hosted by the University of Washington, is the precursor to the 2002 NCAA Championships, which will be held at the par 72, 6,250-yard course May 21-24, 2002.

Led by first-year head coach Mickey Yokoi, the seventh-ranked Sun Devils are six strokes off the pace of Tennessee, which carded a five-over 293 to lead after the first round. Ohio State (294), USC (298), ASU (299) and Auburn (300) round out the top five after the first day of play.

For the Sun Devils, O'Neal led the team, firing a one-over 73 and stands in a tie for 12th place after the first round of play. Sophomore Jimin Kang trails her teammate by just one stroke after shooting a two-over 74 to move into a tie for 21st. Senior Lisa Meredith is tied for 29th after shooting a three-over 75, while in their first action as Sun Devils, junior Ga?lle Truet (77) and freshman Josefin Gustafsson (79) are tied for 53rd and 69th, respectively.

Individually, Tennessee's Young A-Yang and Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn posted the low rounds of the day, firing two-under 70s to tie for the tournament lead after the first round.
