TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State soccer team (4-2) suffered a 3-0 set back by Pepperdine (4-0-2) today at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Under scorching hot sun with the temperatures close to 105 degrees, the two teams battled back and forth with the Waves pulling away with two-second half goals. Both teams had nearly identical statistics throughout with ASU posting 13 shots to the Waves 14.
The Sun Devils looked to take any early lead in the 13th minute when senior Antoinette Marjanovic went dribbling down towards the goal with two Pepperdine defenders with her. Marjanovic shot the ball pass the goalkeeper for the score, but was waved off on an apparent late offsides call by the head referee.
Pepperdine did get on the board in the 36th minute when Melanie Townsend took a pass from Janelle Hillseth and shot the ball pass a diving Kristin Slater for a goal into the bottom left corner.
The Sun Devils had several more scoring chances in the second half, but was unable to break the Wave defense and get the ball pass keeper Lindsey Brouillette. The Waves tallied its next goal in the 80th minute off of a penalty kick from Tasha Spangler and sealed the match in the 84th minute on a Kristi Bissonnette goal that she scored off of a rebound from ASU's Slater.
Up next, Arizona State heads back out on the road for the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington. The Sun Devils will face 15th-ranked and host Kentucky on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Furman on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
