TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Juan Reyes won the men's 8,000m race, to lead the Arizona State men's cross country team to a second-place team finish at the UC Irvine-Asics Invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif., Saturday morning. ASU's women's squad also finished second, led by junior Cody Sohn and freshman Amanda Lyon, who placed fourth and fifth on the 5,000m course, respectively.
In addition to Reyes, ASU's men, who finished with 46 points, were bolstered by the performance of freshman JJ Duke who finished sixth in his first collegiate meet. Also scoring for the Sun Devils were senior J.R. Cox (10th), sophomore Dan Maher (13th), senior Phillip Prince (16th), sophomore Kyle Morgan (20th) and senior Charles Sharpe (27th).
ASU's women also opened the 2001 season in fine fashion, notching a runner-up finish with 64 points. Behind Sohn and Lyon were freshman Desiree Davila who placed 15th and sophomore Jennifer Hurbis who finished 17th. Also scoring points for the women were sophomore Alvina Begay (31st) and senior Kristin McFerron (39th).
Host UC Irvine won the women's team title (61 points), with Northern Arizona finishing third with 75 points. Winning the men's team title was Northern Arizona (33 points) and Cal Poly SLO took third (58 points).
ASU cross country will take the next two weeks off before sending the Sun Devil "A" teams to the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, while the remaining runners will compete at the Canyon West Invitatonal at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Saturday, Sept. 29.
