MONTEREY, Calif. - The Arizona State women's golf team shot a two-over par 290, their lowest round of the season, Monday and is in second place after the first round of the San Jose State Spartan Invitational, being held at the par 72, 5,938-yard Corral de Tierra Country Club Monday-Wednesday March 5-7.
The Sun Devils, who won the Spartan Invitational last season, trail New Mexico State (287) by three strokes after the first round of play. Pepperdine (298), Oklahoma State (299), Washington (299) and Tulsa (299) round out the top five.
Individually, junior Lisa Meredith matched her career best with a one-under 71 on the day and is tied with New Mexico State's Krista Ursula Tuutti for third place after the first round. New Mexico State's Alena Sharp and Rachel Bailey are tied for the lead with two-under 70s after one day of play.
Freshman Jimin Kang is tied for fifth, tying her career low with an even 72 on the first day, while sophomore Melanie Hunt stands in a tie for ninth (73) and senior Molly Cooper shot a 74 in the first round to tie for 14th heading into the second round. Rounding out the Sun Devil squad is sophomore Blair O'Neal who is tied for 36th after shooting a 77 on Monday.
Play resumes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MST and concludes on Wednesday.
