TUCSON, Ariz. -- One week after tying its school record with a 197.125 performance at the UNO's Classic, Arizona State's ninth-ranked women's gymnastics team (7-4) destroyed the standard with a 197.45-196.9 victory over No. 22 Arizona (4-14) in front of 522 fans at McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz., Friday.
While erasing the record mark first set against Washington in 1997, ASU also rewrote two event records. Improving upon the school record 49.375 uneven bars total from the UNO's Classic, ASU jumped to 49.425. On the floor exercise, the Sun Devils ousted a 1999 mark of 49.575 with a 49.625.
It didn't take long to see that ASU was at the top of its game. Senior Kristin Fanning led off the night on bars with her best score of the year (9.8), before Maggie Germaine followed Kim Skinner's fall with a 9.85. Then senior Kelly Cowley and sophomore Margaret Wojciak turned in back-to-back 9.9s, before junior Laura Moon closed out the event with a 9.975.
After rotating to vault, Ashley Stewart offered 9.825 before Germaine scored a team season-high 9.9 on the apparatus. Cowley's 9.8 and sophomore Cassidy Vreeke's personal-best 9.825 put the finishing touches on a season-best effort for ASU: 49.125.
Having nipped Arizona on vault by a 0.025 and on bars by a tenth (0.1), ASU shifted to floor and turned on its after-burners. First it was senior Becky Acker with a 9.825, then it was Moon with a 9.875. Sophomore Ashley Ellsberry upped her personal best with a 9.9, and then Germaine matched her best with a 9.925. As if that wasn't enough, the senior tandem of Fanning and Cowley finished it off with career-best scores of 9.95 and 9.975, respectively.
Entertaining a more comfortable lead of 148.175-147.425 going into the final rotation, ASU didn't let up on balance beam. Combining for a season-best 49.275, the Sun Devils ran their record to 7-0 when winning on beam.
One of ASU's high beams scores was turned in by Germaine, who used her season-best 9.875 effort to complete an ASU season-high all-around total of 39.550. Albeit a runner-up finish to Arizona's Randi Liljenquist's 39.650, Geramine moved one step closer to the Sun Devil record of 39.575.
Competing only on beam, junior Rhonda Robinette showed why she was ASU's co-season leader on the apparatus with a 9.9 effort that earned a share of first-place. The Sun Devils now return home for consecutive home meets to finish out the regular season, starting with Auburn, Friday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
