TEMPE, Ariz. - Highlighted by junior Laura Moon's first career perfect 10.0 score, Arizona State's 13th-ranked women's gymnastics team performed to a school-record-tying 197.125 to win the UNO's Classic in Wells Fargo Arena, Friday night.
Picking up a trio of wins, ASU improved its record to 6-4, defeating No. 25 California (195.875, 9-8), Boise State (193.225, 6-5) and UC Santa Barbara (185.075, 2-13). The Sun Devils' third home win this season increased ASU's home winning streak to 24 meets against 38 opponents, dating back to 1996.
Thrilling the 1,508 in attendance, Moon's perfect mark came as she closed out the second rotation on the uneven bars. The Sun Devils' first 10.0 score in two seasons, and 14th all-time, Moon's perfect routine put the finishing touch on the Sun Devils' school-record bars total of 49.375.
"It felt great," Moon said of her bars performance. "You're never quite sure (what the score will be), but when it was over I felt it had it was one of my best routines ever." Lifted by her bars score, Moon's first-place all-around total of 39.525 was also a career high, as she added scores of 9.75 on vault, 9.9 on balance beam and 9.875 on the floor exercise.
Fellow all-arounder Maggie Germaine increased her personal best with a runner-up 39.375 total. Putting up a 9.85, Germaine tied for first on vault with California's Carrie Kreifels, pacing the Sun Devils to a season-high 49.0 in the event. Germaine also added a 9.9 on bars, but got her best score of the night on floor -- 9.925 -- where ASU put forth yet another season best total: 49.525.
Tying Germaine for first place on floor were seniors Kelly Cowley and Kristin Fanning. The 9.925 score was a career-high for Fanning, who is averaging a 9.86 in the event this season.
Sophomore Ashley Ellsberry, who matched her career best on floor with a 9.875, took first-place honors on beam with a career-high 9.925.
ASU recorded the highest score of the night in every discipline except vault, in which Cal earned a 49.025.
"We did really well tonight, but we also see things we did wrong," Moon said. "That's what we want, because we want to keep improving. We definitely haven't peaked yet."
Next week ASU will make the short trip south to Tucson to meet intrastate rival Arizona at 7:30 p.m. (MST), Friday, March 2.
