TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Molly Cooper shot a three-over 75 to lead the Arizona State women's golf team into a tie for 12th place after the first round of the Arizona Invitational being held Feb. 19-21 at the par 72, 6,119-yard Raven at Sabino Springs.
The Sun Devils shot a 25-over 313 in the first round, led by Cooper who is tied for 18th individually (39-36=76). Freshman Jimin Kang is tied for 20th after shooting a 76 (36-40) on Monday, while sophomore Melanie Hunt is tied for 58th with an 80 (39-41) in the first round. Rounding out the Sun Devil squad are junior Lisa Meredith who is tied for 71st with a first-round 82 (42-40) and sophomore Blair O'Neal who stands in a tie for 77th (40-43=83). Senior Michaela Friberg, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 82nd with an 84 (38-46) in the first round.
Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn (70) and Candy Hannemann hold the top two spots individually, while tournament host Arizona holds a one-stroke lead over Duke in the team race after shooting a five-over 293 on Monday. USC (295), Stanford (298) and New Mexico State (302) round out the top five.
The tournament continues Tuesday and Wednesday with a shotgun start each day at 8 a.m.
