TEMPE, Ariz. - David Adams made two free throws with 2:15 to play, and Washington State snapped its record 30-game losing streak in Pac-10 road games with a 58-57 victory over Arizona State on Thursday night.
In the final 14.4 seconds, Tommy Smith of Arizona State and the Cougars' J Locklier missed two free throws each.
After Locklier's second miss with 12.7 seconds to go, Sean Redhage rebounded for the Sun Devils.
But teammate Kyle Dodd missed a 17-footer, the ball caromed out of bounds with 1.4 seconds to go, and the Cougars (9-11, 2-8) began celebrating their first conference win on the road since they beat Oregon State 69-53 on Jan. 15, 1998.
Mike Bush had 20 points for Washington State, 14 in the second half. Framecio Little scored 13, and Locklier had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Adams had his 10 points in the second half, including back-to-back 3-pointers midway.
Awvee Storey had 16 points and Redhage 12 for the Sun Devils (10-11, 2-8). Smith had 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double.
The Sun Devils had beaten Washington State three straight years in Tempe and appeared ready to make it three in the first half.
The Cougars missed nine of their first 10 shots and trailed 27-10 after a 10-0 Arizona State run.
But they cut their halftime deficit to 35-25, and Bush scored 20 seconds into the second half. From there, the Cougars whittled away.
Redhage sent the Devils to a 57-48 lead with a short jumper with 5:47 to play, but Arizona State was out of field goals. In the next 3:20, Bush made a basket and four free throws, and Adams went end-to-end for a layup, and the Cougars closed to within 57-56.
