TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State's 25th-ranked women's gymnastics team came from behind in the final rotation and upset No. 1 UCLA 196.35-196 in front of 2,108 fans at Wells Fargo Arena Friday.
The Sun Devils (2-2) handed UCLA (5-1) its first loss of the season while extending their home winning streak to 22 home meets against 34 opponents, dating back to 1996.
"It just goes to show you that you never know what to expect in a college gymnastics meet," ASU head coach John Spini said. "This is going to shock people."
After three events, UCLA went into the final rotation clinging to a three-tenth advantage, 147.325-147.025. But while ASU was positing a 49.325 on the floor exercise, UCLA endured two falls on the balance beam - one by former U.S. Olympian Jamie Dantzsher -- and watched their lead slip away.
While neither Sun Devil won the all-around, ASU benefited from outstanding performances by junior Laura Moon and freshman Maggie Germaine. Moon's 9.875 on the uneven bars led the Sun Devils in that event and was matched only by UCLA's Onnie Willis, en route to her all-around total of 39.325. Germaine, who scored in every event for ASU, earned one of the Sun Devils' three 9.875 marks on floor that put the Sun Devils' on top.
The Bruins, who got an all-around victory from Malia Jones' 39.375, received their highest mark of the night from Kristin Parker's 9.0 vault.
"This was just a fantastic effort from our girls," Spini said. "They knew all about how good UCLA was, but they showed that they were up to the challenge."
The Sun Devils will be back in action at Wells Fargo Arena again next Friday, February 2, when they host Washington at 7:30 p.m.
