SAN MARCOS, Texas -- A balanced attack of double-digit kills by seniors Amanda Burbridge and Michelle Mortensen, and junior Jami Coughlin, helped lift the Arizona State University volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Sacramento State in San Marcos, Texas at the B&G Properties Invitational.
The Sun Devils improved their tournament record to 2-0 and season record to 3-2 with the impressive 15-8, 15-2, 15-9 win over the Sac State Hornets. ASU beat Saint Louis 3-1 in the first match of the day at the tournament hosted by Southwest Texas.
Burbridge (Scottsdale) led the Sun Devils in kills for the fifth straight contest this year by notching 18. The senior All-America candidate, who is now ranked eighth in the ASU record books for career kills, also added a team-high 15 digs in Friday afternoons match. Coughlin (Glendale) had 14 kills, while Mortensen (Chandler) added 11.
Freshman setter Cheryl Anglin (Queens Creek) continued to thrive in only her fourth career start by recording 47 assists. Redshirt freshman Mandy Stephens (Napa, Calif.), who is the tallest Sun Devil at 6-3, was also impressive in her two matches Friday with 15 combined kills. ASU out-hit the Hornets, who were 22-10 in 1999, .280 to .085.
The Sun Devils will continue tournament play with an afternoon game against Sacramento State to conclude the first day of the tournament. ASU will take on IUPUI and host Southwest Texas to conclude the tournament Saturday.
