Volleyball Drops Match To Cal In Four Games

Sept. 29, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Outside hitter Alicia Perry recorded a team-high 23 kills to lead a strong offensive attack by the California Golden Bears in 3-1 win over the Arizona State University Sun Devils in Pac-10 volleyball Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

ASU has been torrid on the road this year with a perfect 9-0 record, but unfortunately the team has been cold at home in Wells Fargo Arena, and with the loss to Cal Friday night, ASU now has a home record of 1-4. The Sun Devils are now 10-4 in 2000 and 2-2 in Pac-10 play. The Devils entered play Friday night with a five-match winning streak and had won nine of their last 10 matches.

The Bears (6-5, 2-3) played strong up front with Perry's 23 kills and won several key points down the stretch to give Cal their first victory over ASU since 1997. ASU had won 13 of the last 14 matches vs. Cal and with the loss still own the all-time series lead 23-10.

In addition to Perry's 23 kills and 25 digs, Candace McNamee had a solid match with 11 kills, six digs and 30 assists. Reena Pardiwala added 11 kills and 11 digs to the Cal victory.

The Sun Devils were led by senior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge (Scottsdale) who tallied 22 kills and 20 digs. The senior now has 11 double-doubles this season and has recorded 20 or more kills now in seven matches. Sophomore Julia Leddy (Mesa) had 17 kills, falling one short of her career high.

Senior Becky Sidoti (La Habra, Calif.) has played sparingly at the setter position this season, but came off the bench to contribute a solid match with 32 assists and two digs. Freshman setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek) had 33 assists in the ASU loss.

The Sun Devils will take on #15 Stanford on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The Cardinal are coming off a three-game loss to Arizona and have now dropped three straight matches for the first time since 1989.
