TEMPE (AP) - California found a way to slow down Eddie House, but he still scored 21 points as Arizona State defeated the Golden Bears 85-76 Thursday night.
The victory keeps NCAA tournament bid hopes alive for Arizona State (18-11) going into its season finale at home Saturday against No. 2 Stanford.
Earlier this season, House scored a Pac-10 Conference record-tying 61 points in a 111-108 triple overtime victory over California. This time, California effectively employed a box-and-one defense against House, limiting him to 13 shots.
California controlled play early, leading 15-11 eight minutes into the first half. Arizona State then went on a 24-11 run to lead 35-26 before settling for a 37-33 halftime lead.
The Sun Devils built a 10-point lead early in the second half but led 75-71 with just over two minutes remaining. The Sun Devils then hit seven free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory, and Chad Prewitt made four of them in the final minute.
Donnell Knight added 16 points and Prewitt 14 for Arizona State.
Sean Lampley led the Golden Bears (16-13) with 21 points, and Joe Shipp added 17.
