LOS ANGELES - Led by April Ross' 17 kills and a .302 team hitting percentage, the No. 6 USC Trojans recorded a 3-1 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils Thursday evening in Pac-10 volleyball action at North Gym on the USC campus.
The Women of Troy improved their season record to 20-2 on the year and remain in second place with a 13-2 record in Pac-10 action. The Sun Devils had a three-match win streak come to an end and are now 17-9 on the year and are in fourth place at 9-7 in Pac-10 play.
Senior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge led all players with 20 kills and recorded 13 digs. She became the second player in ASU history and only the 17th player in Pac-10 history to join the 1,500 kill, 1,000 dig club. Current assistant coach Christine Garner is the only other Sun Devil to reach the milestone, tallying 1,871 kills and 1,253 digs in her illustrious career from 1992-95. Burbridge now has 515 kills in '00, becoming only the third player in school history to top that mark. The Scottsdale native is currently fourth in ASU history in career kills, needing just five more vs. UCLA to move into third place.
The Sun Devils jumped out to the early lead with a 15-9 win in game one. Burbridge paced the way by recording eight kills and hitting .400, surpassing the 1,500 kill mark for her career. ASU out-hit the Women of Troy .324 to .125 in the opening set. Game two saw the Trojans battle back and hand the Devils a 15-5 setback.
The Trojans came out of the gates hot in game three and never looked back. The stormed out to a early decisive lead, and never turned back earning a 15-3 win to go up 2-1 in the match. The Women of Troy hit a scorching .500 (13-2-22) in the fourth game.
Down 7-6 in game four, USC's Janae Henry rattled off four consecutive services aces to give the Women of Troy a 10-7 lead. From there, the Trojans continued their hot hitting by finishing the match with nine unanswered points to gain the match victory.
Freshman setter Cheryl Anglin recorded 39 assists and now has 1,258 in her rookie campaign, already fourth best in single-season school history. The Trojans were led by Ross' 17 kills and four blocks. Katie Olsovsky added 12 kills and Henry tallied 13 more.
The Sun Devils take on No. 7 UCLA tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. PST in Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net.
