Arizona State (4-1, 1-1 Pac-10), Cal (1-4, 0-2 Pac-10) Official Start Time: 3:39 p.m. Game Time Temp: 95? Attendance: 41,113
? The Golden Retriever: Todd Heap's first quarter touchdown (2nd of the year) reception of 50 yards was a career long catch. With 2 catches and 97 yards today (TD), junior tight end Todd Heap, a 1999 third team AP All-American, now needs just four receptions and 14 yards to become ASU's career leader among tight ends in both categories, marks set by Ken Dyer from 1965-67 (88 catches, 1,365 yards). Heap's first quarter TD reception of 50 yards was a career-long catch. His second quarter reception of 47 yards would have also been a career high. Heap has now caught a pass in 20 straight games (82 catches over that span).
? A Career Day For Griffin Goodman: With his start vs. Cal, quarterback Griffin Goodman became the third Sun Devil to take snaps for ASU in a starting role this season. The Sun Devils have had five players throw passes in 2000 (Krohn, Kealy, Goodman, Cooper and Mike Williams). This was Goodman's second career start (Wake Forest, Aloha Bowl). Goodman made the most of the day with an 11-for-28 day for 394 yards and three touchdowns. Griffin had a career day, with highs in yardage (394), touchdowns (3), long passing play (68 yards), and completions (11). Goodman had TD strikes of 50, 50 and 68 yards on Saturday.
? Goodman Breaks a School Record: Griffin Goodman was 11-for-28 for 394 yards, for an average of 35.8 yards per completion and 14.1 yards per attempt, both are school records for passing yards per attempt (21-30 attempts) and passing yards per completion (11-20 completions).
? From Offensive Standstill to Offensive Output: In the first two games vs. San Diego State, ASU averaged 11.5 points, 118.5 passing yards and 265.5 yards of total offense per game. In the last three games vs. Utah State, UCLA and today vs. Cal, ASU has had quiet the offensive output with an average of 35 points per game, 386.3 passing yards per game and 511.3 total yards of offense per game.
? Over 1,000 Yards Passing Last 3 Games: The last time ASU had over 1,000 yards passing combined between three consecutive games was in 1990 (374 vs. Washington State, 242 vs. Arizona, and 474 vs. Houston). In the last three games ASU has 1159 yards passing.
? Jumping Out Front First: With a 50-yard TD reception by TE Todd Heap from Griffin Goodman with 6:08 left in the first quarter, ASU has jumped on the scoreboard first in each of the Sun Devil's first five games. With that stat in mind, the Sun Devils have outscored their opponent in the first quarter 40-13. The stingy ASU defense has yet to give up a touchdown in the first quarter since the season-opening SDSU game.
? Snyder Faces His Old Team: ASU head coach Bruce Snyder faced his old team today. Snyder was the head coach at Berkeley from 1987-91 and compiled a career 29-24-2 record at the helm of the Golden Bears. In his last two years at Cal, Snyder was 17-6-1 with two bowl victories before departing for ASU. Snyder now holds a 7-2 record over Cal in his nine years as the head man in Tempe.
? The All-Time Series vs. Cal: The Sun Devils now hold the edge in the all-time series over Cal 13-9. That includes a career 9-4 edge over the Golden Bears at Sun Devil Stadium. ASU has won seven of the last eight contests, with the only loss coming last year in a 24-23 win by Cal in the Pac-10 opener for ASU at Memorial Stadium. Cal QB Kyle Boller made his collegiate debut that game. The Sun Devils have a five-game winning streak over the Bears at home in Sun Devil Stadium, with the last win being a 31-24 victory in 1990.
? On National TV: The Sun Devils have a career 57-50-2 record on live national television, including a 2-1 record in 2000. ASU beat San Diego State 10-7 on August 31 on ESPN2 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The Sun Devils are now 4-1 on national television vs. California, with the last game prior to today being played Nov. 8, 1997 in a 28-21 win on Fox Sports. ASU was 5-3 on live TV in 1999.
? Native Arizonans on Cal Roster: Four players on the Cal roster have Arizona State connections. Standout punter Nick Harris prepped at Westview High School in Avondale, Arizona. Offensive lineman Chris Chick (#72) is a native of Scottsdale, a graduate of Saguaro High School and played at Mesa Community College. Sophomore linebacker Matt Nixon (#47) is from Phoenix and played at Sunnyslope High School. Freshman wide receiver James Smith is a 2000 graduate of Camelback High School in Phoenix.
? Getting to Boller Early: Despite getting off to a quick start, Cal was stopped deep in ASU territory on a sack by DL Kurt Wallin that caused a fumble and was recorded by freshman standout Terrell Suggs. The Bears and QB Kyle Boller were not sacked last weekend vs. Washington State and came into today's game only allowing two sack per game.
? Archie's Bunker: With his TFL in the second quarter for -7 yards, senior linebacker Adam Archuleta now has had at least one tackle for loss in 19 of his last 22 games, including a string of one in each of the five games in 2000. For his career, Archuleta now has 47 TFL's, which moved him into fifth in ASU record books past Scott Stephen (1983-86).
? Goodman to McDonald: Freshman wide receiver Shaun McDonald caught his first career touchdown in the second quarter to give ASU a 16-3 lead. The pass play of 68 yards was the third longest passing play from scrimmage for the Devils this year. The 68-yard pass from Goodman was a career high. The two connected again in the third quarter for a 54-yard reception. McDonald became ASU's third receiver in 2000 to record over 100 yards in a game (O'Neal, Williams).
? Igber's Big Night: Cal tailback Joe Igber rushed for 181 yards, just one yard shy of his career high of 182 yards set against Washington last year. The 181 yards also marks the 16th-best rushing performance in Cal history. In addition, Igber's 80-yard run in the fourth quarter was the longest for the Bears since Tarik Smith ran 90 yards for a TD against San Diego State in 1996.
? Odds and Ends: It took ASU tell 13:15 left in the third quarter to record their first rushing first down of the game... When Cal punter Nick Harris completed a pass on a fake punt in the first quarter, he became the only other Cal player in 2000 to throw a pass in 2000... Tom Pace scored his first touchdown as a Sun Devil on a seven-yard run in the third quarter... it was his first collegiate touchdown run since 1996 when he was freshman at the University of Idaho... the redshirt junior had 93 yards on the ground... ASU has endured back-to-back Pac-10 loses only once since 1995 when they lost to Oregon and at Arizona to close out the 1998 season... With eight pass deflections, ASU now has 36 on the year, the most in the past 15 seasons... Cal's defense had not allowed over 21 points before this game... Freshman running back Skyler Fulton (Olympia, Wash.) made his debut in the offense for ASU after only playing on special teams... Fulton had 13 yards on eight carries.
