STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford's Logan Tom notched 24 kills and four blocks as the 17th ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated Arizona State, 3-1 tonight in Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 15-3, 13-15, 15-4, 15-10.
Tom, who is fresh off playing in the Olympics with the USA National team, helped lead the Cardinal to the win and improved their record to 12-9 overall, 6-7 in league play. The Sun Devils fall to 14-8 overall, 6-6 in the Pac-10.
Stanford opened the first game with five straight points before ASU answered with their first. The Cardinal would score points six and seven on Sun Devil errors. With Stanford leading 7-3, the team shut down ASU, scoring eight consecutive points to close out game one with a 15-3 win. Stanford hit .464 for the game while the Devils hit -.033.
Game two was a see-saw battle that saw six ties throughout the game. With the score knotted at nine-all, ASU scored four quick points to take the 13-9 lead. The Cardinal fought back to tie the game on a service ace by Emily Lawrence. But the Sun Devils hung on for the 15-13 win on a service ace and kill by junior outside hitter Jami Coughlin (Glendale, Ariz.).
The Cardinal came out of the lockeroom fired up and recorded a 15-4 win in game three. Without the help of senior outside hitter and last weeks AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week Amanda Burbridge (Scottsdale, Ariz.), the Sun Devils dropped game four 15-10 to end a two match winning streak and recorded their eighth loss of the 2000 campaign.
Freshman setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) led ASU with 35 assists and in doing so became the most prolific freshman setter in school history with 1,091 assists this year. She broke the 16-year-old school record of 1,062 assists set by Regina Stahl in 1984. Burbridge kept her streak alive of having at least double-digit kills in each of her 20 matches played this year by tallying 10 kills in three games. She was the only Sun Devil to record double-digit kills.
The Sun Devils will take on the California Golden Bears Saturday night to complete their roadtrip to the Bay Area.
