PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Mike Barth kicked a 41-yard field goal in overtime as Arizona State beat Washington State 23-20 on Saturday.

Barth's winning kick came after the snap was fumbled on a 35-yard attempt on third down, but recovered by the Sun Devils (5-2, 2-2 Pacific-10).

Washington State (3-4, 1-3) had the first possession in overtime, but the drive ended when Adam Archuleta intercepted Jason Gesser's pass on the goal line.

The Cougars' Marcus Williams caught a pass from Gesser to tie it at 20 midway through the third quarter.

Arizona State quarterback Jeff Krohn sat out the second quarter with a mild concussion. He was replaced by Griffin Goodman, who connected on a 34-yard pass play to Donnie O'Neal to put the Sun Devils up 20-12 with a minute left in the first half.

Krohn, who returned to start the third quarter, completed 18 of 27 passes for 214 yards and one interception.

In his first series, Goodman's pass was intercepted by Billie Newman at the Arizona State 21. Two plays later, Deon Burnett scored on an 8-yard run to pull Washington State to 14-10. A punt snap that sailed through the end zone late in the second quarter made it 14-12.

Solomon Bates intercepted Gesser's pass and returned it 34 yards to the WSU 36, setting up Mike Williams' 1-yard run for the Sun Devils' first score.

Tom Pace made it 14-0 with a 2-yard scoring run after Justin Taplin returned a punt 47 yards to the Washington State 17. Pace led Arizona State in rushing with 83 yards on 23 carries.

Gesser completed 14 of 30 passes for 321 yards.

Anousith Wilaikul kicked a 37-yard field goal to start the Cougars' scoring late in the first quarter, but missed a 41-yarder that would have won the game with 1:12 remaining in regulation.
