Box Score

BERKELEY - Sophomore forward Laura Schott scored two more goals to lead No. 8 California to a 3-0 victory over Arizona State Friday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 13-1-1 and 3-1 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils (ranked No. 25 by Soccer Times) dropped to 11-4 and 2-3 in league play.

ASU got off to a strong start, grabbing an early 3-1 lead on shots do in large part to the play of forward Patrice Feulner. She was being defended by Cal's Ashley Mueller, who was struggling with asthma. Once Cal coach Kevin Boyd subbed defender Kim Stocklmeier in for Mueller, the Bears were able to contain Feulner and hold a 12-7 shot advantage for the game.

"They were definitely trying to target their strong side forward (Feulner) and play in to a mid from there and run through," said Boyd. "We weren't taking away that forward very well from our backs. And part of that was because the person defending her (Mueller) was struggling breathing. As soon as we changed her, I thought we took that option away, and we did well. Into the second half until I went deep into the bench, we hadn't given up a shot."

Schott put the Bears up 1-0 with her 19th goal of the season at 25:10. Sophomore midfielder Brittany Kirk fed the ball to junior forward Kyla Sabo, who found Schott for a four-yard goal on the left side.

About two minutes later, Schott put the Bears up 2-0 when she stripped an ASU defender of the ball and took on her and another defender for a breakaway goal. The goal was Schott's 20th (second on the Cal season chart) of the year and marked her fifth multi-goal game of the season. The Wilsonville, Ore., native's scoring total has climbed to a league-best 41 points, which ties U.S. Olympian Joy Fawcett for the third-most points in Cal history.

"What can you say about Laura," said Boyd. "She just keeps pulling them out. That first goal, I don't even know how she came up with the ball, let alone came out with it and put it away. The second goal she stripped the back and was gone."

Up 2-0 at halftime, Cal notched an insurance goal in the 67th minute when a Sun Devil defender knocked in junior forward Gretchen Vanderlip's cross from the right side.

After Cal went up 3-0, Boyd went liberally to his bench. Junior goalkeeper Gabby Ronick entered the game in the 78th minute and teamed with senior Maite Zabala to secure the Bears ninth shutout of the season.

Cal closes out a three-game homestand against the Arizona Wildcats Sunday at noon at Edwards Stadium.
