Box Score

PROVO, Utah - The 23rd-ranked BYU women's soccer team rebounded from a disappointing tie earlier in the week with USC, to upset 16th-ranked, and previously unbeaten Arizona State, 5-1, Saturday, in front of 1,942 fans, the fourth-largest crowd ever at South Field.

Senior midfielder Natalyn Lewis got the offense started with a goal just six minutes into the first half on a Kim Lowe assist. Jennie Christiansen scored the Cougars second goal at the 31:30 mark. Lowe scored minutes later when her shot trickled by the ASU goalkeeper, and freshman Lydia Ojuka got her first goal of the season to put BYU up 4-0 going into halftime.

"We were able to find the goal today and that broke the ice for us," said BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We found some good openings and were able to put the ball in the net tonight. Our goal was to score early and we did that."

BYU opened up a 5-0 lead early in the second half when Sara Reading put the ball in the upper corner of the net. The Sun Devils did manage to score a goal as ASU senior Karine Inoue got one by the Cougar goalkeepr, preventing the shutout.

"Everything so far this season has been in preparation for league play which starts Thursday," Rockwood said.

BYU moves to 8-3-1 on the year while Arizona State suffers its first loss and falls to 9-1-0 . The Cougars look to defend their Mountain West Conference title as league play begins at Albuquerque on Thursday, October 5, against New Mexico at 7 p.m. They then travel to Salt Lake City to play the University of Utah on Saturday, October 7, at 1 p.m.
