HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Arizona State women's golf team finished in a tie for 14th Saturday in the rain-shortened NCAA Fall Preview, held at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort on the par 73, 6,210-yard El Campeon course.
Saturday's play was delayed for nearly three hours as heavy rains pounded the area, and tournament officials decided to cancel Sunday's final round due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gordon which was expected to dump up to seven inches of rain in Lake County on Sunday. Play Saturday was finished in a driving rain storm.
The 11th-ranked Sun Devil squad shot a 27-over 319 on Saturday to finish at 45-over 629 for the tournament, 24 strokes behind third-ranked Duke which won the NCAA Fall Preview for the second consecutive season. No. 1 Arizona trailed by three strokes to finish second, while Tennessee, Wake Forest and USC rounded out the top five.
Freshman Jimin Kang, the 24th-ranked player in the country, turned in the best performance of the day for the Sun Devils, carding a three-over 75 to finish in a tie for 27th (78-75=153). Sophomore Blair O'Neal tied for 44th (75-81=156), while junior Lisa Meredith finished in a tie for 50th with a pair of consistent rounds (78-79=157).
