TEMPE, Ariz. - Mike Barth kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to give Arizona State a 13-10 victory over Colorado State on Saturday night.
Mike Williams ran for 143 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries for Arizona State (2-0), which improved to 20-1 against Colorado State (2-1) and 16-0 against the Rams in Tempe.
The Sun Devils began their winning drive with 1:40 left on their own 35. Barth kicked the field goal on the 10th play.
Colorado State overcame a 10-0 deficit to tie it in the fourth quarter. C.W. Hurst kicked a 24-yard field goal with 11:57 to go, and Matt Newton threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jose Ochoa with 5:46 left.
The field goal was set up by a strange play. Arizona State's Kenny Williams knocked the ball out of Newton's hand, but the ball bounced on the ground and back up to Newton, who hit Frank Rice with a 59-yard pass.
Colorado State came into the game averaging 34.5 points, but the Rams had trouble moving the ball against the Sun Devils' blitzing defense. Newton, under pressure most of the night, completed 14 of 31 passes for 225 yards.
Neither team had much success moving the ball in a scoreless first quarter. Arizona State had the best scoring opportunity, but Barth missed a 50-yard field-goal attempt.
Barth was successful on his next attempt, a 23-yarder with 6:07 left in the first half that put Arizona State up 3-0. The field goal capped an 11-play, 51-yard drive. Williams accounted for most of the yardage, rushing six times for 39 yards.
Colorado State continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter, reaching only the Arizona State 43.
The Sun Devils went up 10-0 with 1:04 left in the third quarter when Williams scored from a yard out to finish an 11-play, 80-yard drive.
