TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State University volleyball team was upset by a group of alumni in five sets Saturday evening at PE East on the ASU campus. After trailing 2-0, the Alumni staged a comeback by winning the next three games to record the first victory in the series history by scores of 13-15, 7-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-10.
Christine Garner, who is now the Sun Devils assistant coach, led the way for the Alumni with 29 kills and nine digs. Terri Cox (1994-97) and Laura Hibsman (1996-99) each tallied 12 kills and Lisa Stuck (1980-83) had 11. The Alumni squad featured three players from the 1999 squad that advanced to the NCAA tournament and Garner, who was an All-American and all-time leader in kills in her playing days at ASU.
The ASU varsity squad was led by senior All-American candidate Amanda Burbridge who had 26 kills. Senior Becky Sidoti recorded 50 assists and freshman Courtney Blocher had four service aces. Juniors Robyn Mattingly and Jami Coughlin each tallied 14 kills for the varsity squad.
The Sun Devils open the regular season vs. San Jose State on Sept. 1 in the Phoenix Airport Hilton/Sun Devil Challenge at Wells Fargo Arena. Patti Snyder-Park, who is in her 12th hear at the helm of the ASU volleyball program, is 9-2 in season openers.
