FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Northern Arizona women's soccer team opened the 2000 season with a loss Friday night to in-state-rival Arizona State, 3-0. The Jacks set a new home attendance record playing in front of 517.
The Jacks battled ASU tough, holding it scoreless for the first 36 minutes of the match. The Sun Devils' Stacey Tullock ended the scoring drought at 36:06 scoring her first goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 until the second half when Arizona State's Antoinette Marjanovic put one in the back of the net, increasing the ASU lead to 2-0. The Sun Devils added another goal late to make it 3-0.
Despite the three goals, junior goalkeeper Erin Beckman had a solid match recording nine saves.
It was an overall physical match evidenced by the Jacks' stadium-record 19 fouls. It was the first time since NAU shut out Cal State Northridge Oct. 10, 1999, that the Jacks were tagged with more fouls than their opponents.
"I was proud of our effort," said NAU head coach Tracy Custer. "I believe this is the closest we've ever played ASU. We were very physical and aggressive and our girls left the field believing they could play with Arizona State. ASU is led by Stacey Tullock and she made some great plays tonight."
