TEMPE, Ariz. - The fifth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (39-16, 7-11 Pac-10) fell to top-ranked Washington (54-6, 14-3 Pac-10), 7-3, today at Farrington Stadium.
Washington jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, two runs coming by a pass ball.
Arizona State had a chance to score in the bottom of the first. With one out and the bases loaded, Sara Kahler hit the ball to UW's first baseman for the second out and then threw home, tagging out Missy Hixon on an extremely close play at the plate.
ASU would get on the board in the second inning, when Jamie Hlebechuk doubled to left center, driving in Stacey Farnworth all the way from first.
The Sun Devils then tied the game at three apiece in the fourth inning, when Nichole Thompson belted a two out double to left center to plate Anne Thul and Erin Wardein.
But the Huskies would put two more across the plate in the sixth and seventh innings.
Arizona State was led at the plate by Erica Beach, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, while Thompson and Hlebechuk posted two and one RBIs respectively.
UW starter Jamie Graves allowed all three runs and was pulled in the fourth inning for Jennifer Spediacci. ASU's Kirsten Voak took the loss, giving up eight hits, six earned runs with six strikeouts.
The Sun Devils will close out its regular season on the road next weekend with a single game against California on Friday, May 12 and a doubleheader against Stanford on Saturday, May 13.
