Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Behind a two-hit pitching performance by sophomore Amanda Freed, the third-ranked UCLA Bruins (36-8, 11-4 Pac-10) shutout fifth-ranked Arizona State (39-14, 7-9 Pac-10), 2-0, tonight at Farrington Stadium.

Freed (19-6) did not allow a Sun Devil to reach second base as she limited ASU to two hits, while striking out five. ASU's Kirsten Voak (27-7) took the loss, going six innings, allowing seven hits with only one strikeout. Erica Beach relived Voak and pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

UCLA posted the first run in the third inning. With one out, Lupe Brambila doubled to the gap in right center and then advanced to third on a fielding error. Freed then doubled to left field to drive in Brambila.

The Bruins would tag the last run on in the sixth inning off of four hits. Again with one out, Julie Adams singled to right field and was then replaced by Toria Auelua as a pinch runner. After a Julie Marshall pop up to first base for the second out, Lyndsey Klein singled to left field followed by a Courtney Dale single to right field. Tairia Mims then hit a hard single to ASU's shortstop Kara Brun, who made a nice play at deep short to keep it in the infield, but Auelua scored from third.

Arizona State's Brun and Voak each had a single off Freed. The Sun Devils left only one base runner, while the Bruins left seven runners stranded. UCLA's Klein led the team, going 2-for-3, while Freed went 1-for-4 with a RBI.

Up next, Arizona State will host top-ranked Washington on Saturday at 6:00 p.m., while UCLA travels south to Tucson to face second-ranked Arizona at 6:00 p.m.
