The fourth-ranked ASU Sun Devils completed a three-game sweep in their final regular season homestand with a 13-2 victory over Washington this afternoon. Arizona State moves to 40-12 on the year, 15-6 in league play, while the Huskies fall to 25-26, 7-14 in Pac-10 action.
With today's win, the Sun Devils move into a tie for second with Stanford (15-6) while UCLA (15-5) remains a half game in front with a 10-0 win over Arizona this afternoon.
Arizona State collected its 101st hit by pitch in today's game, tying them with Washington (1998) for the Pac-10 single-season record.
The Sun Devils jumped out to the early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first off of lefty starter Taylor Grant. Designated hitter Jonah Martin lead off the inning with a walk then stole second base. Rightfielder Jeff Duncan singled to centerfield, moving Martin to third. With runners on the corners, Casey Myers walked to load the bases. Third baseman Jeff Phelps hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield, scoring Martin. Two outs on the board, second baseman Brooks Conrad tripled to left centerfield, scoring Duncan and Myers.
The Huskies would score one run in the fourth and one in the sixth to keep the game close before the Devils would put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach. ASU scored three in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Freshman starter Jered Liebeck (2-1) picked up the win for Arizona State, going 5.0 innings, allowing only one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Taking the loss for Washington was starter Taylor Grant (2-5) who was tagged for six runs (four earned) off six hits in five innings of work.
Junior Jeff Duncan led the team with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with three runs scored. Sophomore Brooks Conrad had a 2-for-5 day at the plate with five RBI. Conrad became only the 18th player in ASU history to hit a homerun over the green monster in centerfield. It was the first homerun over the green monster this season.
Junior Jonah Martin collected two hits for the Devils along with two runs while junior Casey Myers scored three runs and notched two RBI on the afternoon.
For Washington, Todd Linden and Taylor Davidson each had two hits while Davidson and Jay Garthwaite notched an RBI a piece.
The Sun Devils are next in action down in Tucson for their final Pac-10 conference series against Arizona. Friday's game time is set for 7 p.m.
