The fourth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils scored early and often in a 25-5 rout of the Washington Huskies tonight at Packard Stadium. ASU improves to 38-12 overall, 13-6 in league play while Washington falls to 25-24, 7-12 in Pac-10 action.
The Sun Devils tagged Husky starter Matt Massingale for five runs in the first inning, two more in the second and six in the third before he left the game. Massingale (6-6) took the loss for Washington, allowing 13 runs on 12 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Arizona State would score in every inning except the fifth and sixth on the evening.
Designated pitcher of record Jon Switzer picked up his 10th win on the year, pitching four shutout innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Freshman reliever Bryce Kartler notched his first save going four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.
Second baseman Brooks Conrad went 5-for-5 with six RBI and four runs scored while centerfielder Phil Downing had a 3-for-4 night at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Senior Mitch Jones contributed four RBI. Catcher Casey Myers went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Mike Lopez, Jeff Duncan and Mitch Jones each had two hits.
ASU's Jonah Martin was hit by a pitch for the 26th time this season which ties him for fifth in the NCAA record book for a single season.
For the Huskies, Tila Reynolds, Ed Erickson, Tyler Davidson and Jay Garthwaite each had two hits on the night. Garthwaite hit his 11th homerun of the season as well.
The Sun Devils and Huskies square off for game two of the three game conference series on Saturday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Junior right-hander Jason Fingers (1-1, 3.25 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start for Arizona State. Washington will send junior right-handed pitcher Jeff Carlsen (6-2, 5.38 ERA) to the mound.
