TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite ceding a 2-0 advantage before the match began, sixth-ranked Arizona State women's tennis defeated 54th-ranked Washington State 7-2 this afternoon in Pac-10 action at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The win broke a three-match losing streak for the Sun Devils and improves the team's overall record to 11-5 and their conference tally to 3-2 while the Huskies fall to 10-9 overall, 1-4 in league action.
With injuries to 12th-ranked Allison Bradshaw and senior Kerry Giardino in the Sun Devil lineup, ASU was only able to field five players for today's match. The deficiency automatically defaulted wins to Washington at the No. 6 singles and the No. 3 doubles courts.
The Sun Devils swept the remaining singles matches, winning on courts one through four in straight sets. Freshman Megan Yeats picked up 13th consecutive victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Washington State's Ana Maria Moura on court three. On court four, freshman Mhairi Brown earned her 20th win on the season while on court five, junior Celena McCoury completed her fourth straight three-set match, defeating the Cougars' Moniek van de Ven 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1.
Despite earning the team victory during singles play, doubles matches were contested, with ASU winning both contests.
Arizona State will finish out its regular season with three road matches vs. Pac-10 opponents. The Sun Devils will travel to the Bay Area next weekend and take on California Fri., April 14 at 1:30 p.m. Top-ranked Stanford will host ASU on Sat., April 15, at noon. The Sun Devils will close out regular season play at Arizona on April 22.
