Los Cabos, Mexico --The Arizona State men's golf team, coming off back-to-back victories, struggled in the first round of the Compaq U.S. Collegiate today in Los Cabos, Mexico. ASU shot a 15-over-par 303, its second-worst round of the year, and had just one player shoot par.
Junior Jin Park shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 20th for ASU. Sophomore Matt Jones is tied for 38th for 76, senior Jonas Runnquist shot a 77 (T-43rd), junior All-American Jeff Quinney shot a 78 (T-48th) and junior All-American Paul Casey shot a 79 (T-57th).
ESPN will broadcast the second round on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. Arizona time. The teams will play play 27 holes on Saturday and nine holes on Sunday.
Casey's round of 79 was five strokes higher than his previous worst of the year, a 74 at the Southwestern Classic. He entered the tournament at 57-under-par in his past 32 rounds dating to last year. He is now 24-under-par on the year.
Park's 72 was his fourth round of shooting at least par in his past five rounds. He posted an even 216 (70-72-74) at the Las Vegas Intercollegiate on March 10-12 and also had an even 71 in the final round of the Southwestern Classic.
ASU won the USC Southwestern Classic on Feb. 28-29 and then won the Las Vegas Intercollegiate on March 10-12. ASU will host its own Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational on April 15-16 and also host the Pac-10 Championships on April 24-26. Both tournaments are at The ASU Karsten Golf Course. ASU is the five-time defending Pac-10 Champion and also won the 1999 Thunderbird Invitational.
