CORVALLIS, Ore. - Arizona State's Kirsten Voak tossed a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts to lead the No. 4 Sun Devils to a 6-0 victory over the No. 12 Oregon State softball team at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Sunday.
Voak struck out the first three Beaver batters and held OSU hitless until Shelly Prochaska lifted a base hit to centerfield in the fourth inning.
Meanwhile, the Sun Devils got their offense started early in the game. ASU (39-13, 7-8 Pac-10) capitalized on three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch to score three runs in the top of the first inning. ASU added three more runs in the fifth inning off two hits, a walk and another hit by pitch to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Beavers (34-14-1, 4-8 Pac-10) left three runners on base and never really threatened to score. OSU had two runners on with just one out in the second inning, but ASU shortstop Kara Brun stopped Parisa Plant's line drive and turned the double play as Michelle Chariton failed to get back to second base before the throw.
After that inning, no other OSU batters got past first base. Prochaska extended her hitting streak to nine games with her single in the fourth inning, and Tarrah Beyster had a single in the seventh inning. Michelle Notaro had a pinch hit single in the sixth inning for OSU's only other hit.
Brun and Nichole Thompson both went 2-for-4 and scored twice for ASU, while Brun also had two RBI. Sun Devil catcher Sara Kahler was 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Voak improved to 27-6 with the win, while OSU's Crystal Draper dropped to 12-5 on the season. Draper threw four-plus innings, giving up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Beyster came in on relief in the fifth inning after Jamie Hlebechuk was hit by Draper's pitch. Beyster allowed two hits and two runs while striking out two batters.
