LOS ANGELES -- Third baseman Justin Gemoll's (San Jose/UC Santa Barbara) three-run homer to left started a four-run first inning while Ronald Flores (Pico Rivera/El Rancho HS) pitched three scoreless innings in relief Sunday as the USC Trojans defeated the No. 3 Arizona State Sun Devils, 4-3, at Dedeaux Field. With the win, the Trojans win their first Pac-10 Conference series in a month by taking two of three games against Arizona State (1-3, 12-2 and 4-3).
Brian Barre led off the bottom of the first for the Trojans (30-18, 10-8) with a pop-fly that was dropped by shortstop Brooks Conrad, allowing Barre to reach second. Seth Davidson hit an infield single to right, moving Barre to third before Gemoll's homer. Second baseman Anthony Lunetta hit a double down the left field line and scored on a single by right fielder Rob Garibaldi.
Freshman Anthony Reyes (Whittier/California HS) no-hit the Sun Devils (37-12, 12-6) through the first four innings. He allowed a three-run homer to Conrad before being replaced by Flores.
Arizona State got strong relief from Jason Fingers, who allowed only one hit in five innings of work. Trojan pitching held Arizona State's Casey Myers and Mitch Jones to a combined 0-for-8 on the afternoon. For the series, Jones went 1-for-14 with eight strikeouts while Myers was 4-for-14 with five strikeouts.
