OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The 19th-ranked Oklahoma baseball team ran into a roadblock enroute to their sixth-straight victory as third-ranked Arizona State stopped the surging Sooners, 20-6, Tuesday night at the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The Sun Devils improved to 36-10 on the season, while the Sooners fell to 31-16 overall.
The 20 runs and 19 hits relinquished to the Sun Devils marked season highs for the Oklahoma pitching staff. OU allowed ASU to score in every inning but the third and ninth. Starting pitcher Logan Cuellar (1-1) suffered the loss for the Sooners after giving up four runs, three of which were unearned.
Shortstop Tommy Whiteman continued to produce offensively for OU as the sophomore turned in a 4-for-5 performance with a run scored and three RBIs. The game marked Whiteman's second-straight four-hit effort while extending his hitting streak to 18-consecutive games. Third baseman Jason Bartlett joined Whiteman's multi-hit performance with a three hit effort of his own, including one RBI.
Sun Devil catcher Casey Myers paced ASU offensively by going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs on the night. Similarly, centerfielder Phil Downing produced four hits with two runs scored and four RBIs as well for Arizona State. Franco Pezely (6-2) picked up the win after working 3.2 innings in relief of starter Bryce Kartler.
