Oregon State pitcher Scott Nicholson pitched the Beavers to a 11-3 victory over the fourth-ranked ASU Sun Devils this afternoon at Packard Stadium. The Devils fall to 29-9 on the year, 5-3 in Pac-10 play, while the Beavers improve to 17-16, 1-4 in conference action.
Oregon State jumped out to a two run lead in the top of first with three hits off of ASU starter Chad Pennington. The Beavers chased Pennington from the game in the third inning after the first five batters of the inning reached base.
Arizona State would score one run in the third and two in the eighth.
Taking his first loss of the season was ASU's Chad Pennington (6-1) who lasted two innings while giving up seven runs on six hits.
OSU's Scott Nicholson picked up his fifth win on the year with a complete game effort. Nicholson scattered seven hits over nine innings, allowing three runs with six strikeouts.
Jeff Duncan, Mitch Jones and Casey Myers collected an RBI a piece for the Devils. Duncan, Dennis Wyrick and Jonah Martin scored a run each as well.
OSU designated hitter Andy Jarvis had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. First baseman Joe Gerber went 3-for-4 for the Beavers.
The two teams will close out the three game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time at Packard Stadium. For the Devils, junior Drew Friedberg will take the mound while the Beavers will counter with lefty Mark Newell.
