BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Shavaki Jackson had 18 points and 20 rebounds to lead California past Arizona State 60-55 in overtime Thursday, all but ending the Sun Devils' hopes for an invitation to the NCAA tournament.
Cal (11-16, 6-11 Pac-10) won for the fourth time in five games. Arizona State (14-13, 7-10) lost its sixth straight road game.
Jackson broke a 49-49 tie in the first minute of overtime with two free throws and a put-back, and Courtney Johnson hit a pull-up jumper with 3:00 left in OT to give Cal its biggest lead of the game, 55-49.
Arizona State pulled back to 55-53 with 1:22 remaining after Rachel Holt made two free throws and a lay-in, but Johnson made five of six free throws down the stretch to seal it for Cal. Johnson ended with 16 points.
Kitch Kitchen led Arizona State with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Holt's lay-in with 30 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game for Arizona State. Kenya Corley's lay-in attempt for Cal at the buzzer rolled off the rim and sent the game into overtime.
After shooting just 29 percent in the first half, Cal hit four of its first five shots in the second half. That 9-0 run, capped by Paige Bowie's 3-pointer, gave Cal a 32-29 lead.
After missing six straight shots, Arizona State recovered with a 10-0 run to go up 39-32 with 11:48 to play.
The Bears, however, held the Sun Devils scoreless over a five-minute span to go up 45-41 with 5:45 to play. Neither team led by more than two points again until overtime.
