TEMPE, Ariz. - After four exciting hours of action, the 10th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team (8-2, 3-2 Pac-10) defeated the second-ranked California Golden Bears (3-2, 1-2 Pac-10), 5-4 today at the Robson Player Facility.
In singles competition, the Sun Devils captured wins on four courts, while the Bears snagged wins on two courts with one of the matches extending into the third set. In doubles action, California claimed two wins with ASU serving up the winning final point.
On the singles third court, one of ASU's three California natives, Faye DeVera, dispatched Cal's Karoline Borgersen 6-1, 6-1. Sun Devil freshman Mhari Brown snagged a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Bears' Christina Fusano on court four, increasing her overall record to 16-5. On court five, another Sun Devil freshman, Megan Yeats, secured a win over Cal's Lisa Swierniak, 6-4, 6-2, improving her overall record 17-6. And on court six, ASU's Celena McCoury defeated Cal's Jenny Lee, 6-2, 6-2. Cal's Anita Kurimay and Claire Curran nabbed victories on courts one and two.
In doubles play, the ASU duo of Karin Palme and Kerry Giardino secured the winning point by defeating Cal's tandem of Lee and Fusano, 9-8 (4) on court three. On courts one and two, the Golden Bears' teams of Jensen and Curran, and Kurimay and Borgersen defeated McCoury and DeVera, and Brown and Yeats, 8-3, 8-4, respectively
