TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State women's gymnastics team produced its highest road score of the season with 195.3000 points Saturday night at West Virginia, but fell to the #11 Mountaineers who scored a blistering 196.475 before a crowd of 775.
High marks were in abundance at the Morgantown High School Gymnasium, as the Sun Devils (12-4) recorded 11 scores of 9.85 or better en route to raising their Regional Qualifying Score to 194.95. Senior Elizabeth McNabb had a meet to remember, establishing a new career high on the balance beam at 9.95 to tie WVU's Danielle Lilly for first place. The All-American also recorded a 9.95 on the floor exercise, tying her season best and beating out a quartet of Mountaineers who scored 9.925 to claim top honors in the event.
ASU junior Kelly Christensen-Cowley tied for first in vault competition, equaling the career best 9.9 mark she set two weeks ago. The Sun Devils also got a 9.775 performance from senior Michelle Hess as part of their season high 48.650 team mark. On the uneven bars, Arizona State senior Elizabeth Reid notched a second place finish at 9.9, the fifth consecutive meet she has scored at or above that mark. The All-American also posted 9.875 mark on the floor to establish a new high for the 2000 season.
Other Sun Devil highlights included a 9.875, third place showing by sophomore Lea Carver on the beam, and the 9.85 bar performances by Christensen-Cowley, junior Kim Skinner and freshman Margaret Wojciak who tied for fifth.
ASU's strong meet was overshadowed by West Virginia's second highest team score in school history, which included the Mountaineers' #2 all-time floor mark (49.550). WVU's Kristen Macrie was the all-around victor at 38.750.
The Sun Devils return to Tempe for their final meet of the regular season when in-state rival Arizona visits Wells Fargo Arena on March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
