BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team won the third game of a three-game series versus No. 6 ranked Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils, 7-2, Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improve to 12-16 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State, which had won six straight games, falls to 26-7, 2-1 in conference. Arizona State had defeated Cal, 6-4, on Friday and 4-2 Saturday.

Led by the solid pitching of junior reliever David Cash, the home run hitting of Tommy Callen and Xavier Nady, and three hits apiece from David Weiner and Jason Williams, the Bears were finally able to top the Sun Devils.

Cash (4-3), who suffered the loss against Arizona State Friday, relieved Cal starter Kevin Johnson with two outs in the first inning and went on to pitch 5.7 innings with six hits, one run, one walk and five strikeouts. Senior Jon Cuccias (1.0 inning, one hit, no runs, one strikeout) and junior Rob Meyer (2.0 innings, no hits, no runs, one walk, one strikeout) also pitched well for the Bears. The Sun Devils had scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Casey Myers and a run in the second inning on a lead-off home run by Brooks Conrad. From there, the Cal relievers kept Arizona State scoreless as the Sun Devils left 10 runners on base.

Offensively, the Bears got a spark in the third inning when senior second baseman Tommy Callen hit a three-run homer off of ASU reliever Luke Field (1-2, 1.0 inning, three hits, three runs, one walk, two strikeouts). Cal padded its lead in the fourth inning on RBI doubles by Williams and Weiner. The Bears final scoring came on a two-run homer by Xavier Nady in the seventh inning. Williams finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI double and Weiner was 3-for-5 with an RBI double.
