The ninth-ranked Arizona State baseball team completed a sweep of the University of Maine with two wins today in a doubleheader at Packard Stadium. ASU won the first game, 12-5 and the second game, 24-0. The Sun Devils improve to 24-6 on the season while the Black Bears fall to 1-11.
In the first game of the doubleheader, ASU took the early lead and never looked back. In the bottom of the first, Jeff Duncan doubled down the line followed by a Mitch Jones triple which scored Duncan. Casey Myers then doubled to rightfield scoring Jones. After Jeff Phelps walked, Brooks Conrad reached on an error by the shortstop, loading the bases. Mike Lopez was hit by a pitch, scoring Myers.
Reliever Robby Milner (1-0) picked up the win going 5.2 innings allowing three unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts. Starter Will Waldrip went 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
Jeff Duncan went 3-for-3 with two walks and an RBI while Brooks Conrad finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Mitch Jones and Mike Lopez contributed three RBI each.
Kris Ehmke (0-2) took the loss for Maine, allowing 10 earned runs on 14 hits in six innings of work.
In game two, the Sun Devils again dominated offensively scoring 24 runs on 25 hits. ASU scored in every inning except the third.
Starter Drew Friedberg (1-0) notched the win for ASU pitching six shutout innings allowing only one hit while striking out seven.
Junior Jeff Duncan tied the school record for consecutive hits with nine and went 5-for-6 with five RBI on the night. Mitch Jones hit his 17th homer of the year while going 3-for-4 with five RBI.
Taking the loss for the Black Bears was starter James Bailan (0-3) who lasted 1.2 innings, giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits with one strikeout.
ASU opens Pac-10 play next weekend at California with a three game series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. PST.
