Lefty Jon Switzer pitched seven strong innings and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts as Arizona State defeated Maine 16-1 this evening at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils improve to 21-6 on the year while the Black Bears fall to 1-8.

Maine got on the board first with a solo homerun by third baseman Joe Drapeau in the top of the second inning.

ASU countered with a run in the fourth to tie the game up. The Devils opened the game up with six runs in the fifth, then added another run in the seventh as well as eight runs in the eighth.

Sophomore Jon Switzer (6-0) picked up his sixth win of the season, pitching 7.0 innings allowing only one earned run while striking out 10.

Starter Rob Worcester took the loss for the Black Bears, going 5.0 innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

ASU junior Mike Lopez had a 4-for-5 day at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Mitch Jones went 3-for-6 with three RBI while hitting his 16th homerun of the season. Jeff Phelps, Brooks Conrad and Dennis Wyrick each added 2 hits to the Sun Devil effort. Conrad extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

ASU has now recorded an extra base hit in all 27 games this season and extended their consecutive games streak without being shutout to 281.
