TEMPE, Ariz. - Following Thursday's opening day of competition in Southern California, the Arizona State women's swimming and diving team stands in sixth place at the Pac-10 Conference Championships.
The swimming portion of the competition is being held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, where ASU's 400-yard medley relay team of Lauren Morelli, Sarah Baham, Riley Mants and Carolyn Adel placed sixth in a team season-best time of 3:47.71. Baham and Adel were also member's of the Sun Devils' seventh place 200 freestyle relay team (1:34.64), which also included freshman Claire Hedenskog and senior Tennille Taylor. Adel, a senior, went on to post an eighth place finish in 200 individual medley competition, clocking in at 2:03.46. Other highlights for 18th-ranked Arizona State included senior Casey Murphy's 4:53.53, 11th place showing in the 500 freestyle and Hedenskog's time of 23.94 in the 50 free (12th place), which was best among all ASU racers this year.
The Sun Devil's best individual finisher was senior diver Katrina Pfeuffer, who placed seventh in one-meter competition at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium with a score of 363.37. Arizona State junior Trish Malatesta (351.24) and freshman Cassie Kellerman (344.52) did not advance to the eight-woman finals but finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in preliminary competition.
The Pac-10 Diving Championships continue Friday with the women's three-meter event. The conference swimming championships reconvene Friday with prelims at 11:00 and finals at 6:00 p.m. PST.
