TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Voak fired her first no-hitter of the season as ninth-ranked Arizona State (12-1) shutout Simon Fraser (1-1), 10-0 in a mercy-rule, 5-inning game at Farrington Stadium Monday afternoon.
Simon Fraser, who traveled to Arizona from Burnaby, British Columbia, won the NAIA National Championship last season and was the preseason No. 1 in its poll for this year.
Voak (7-0) was one error from a perfect game as she struck out seven Simon Fraser batters in five innings of work. Head Coach Linda Wells went to her bench often, utilizing 16 players with eight different players getting a hit, while seven produced at least one RBI.
The Sun Devils posted four runs in the first inning, three off an Erica Beach home run over the right field fence. Junior third basemen Stacey Farnworth drove in the fourth run with a single into center field to score Voak from second.
ASU would tally one more run in the second inning when freshman shortstop Kara Brun singled in Missy Hixon. Brun, who has hit safely in all 13 games this year, finished the day going a perfect 3 for 3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Sun Devils would end the game in the fifth with five more runs. Sophomore center fielder Nichole Thompson, who also extended her hitting streak to 13 games, went 1 for 4, scoring her team-leading 19th and 20th runs, while junior Dee Wathen got her first hit as a Sun Devil.
