No. 4 LSU Hands 13th-ranked ASU Baseball 8-4 Loss.

The 4th-ranked LSU Fighting Tiger notched 16 hits as they defeated No. 13 Arizona State 8-4 tonight at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. before a crowd of 7,825. ASU falls to 11-3 on the year while LSU improves to 5-0.

ASU got on the board first scoring one run in the top of the first and two in the third but could not hold the lead. The Tigers would roar back to score two in the fourth and four in the fifth to take the lead. They added a run in the sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach.

Leftfielder Mitch Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBI including his 10th homerun of the season - a two-run blast to left centerfield. Jeff Phelps went 2-for-3 while Jeff Duncan went 2-for-4 in the losing effort.

On the mound, reliever Eric Doble took the loss for the Devils, allowing four runs on four hits in one inning of work. Starter Will Waldrip went 4.0 innings giving up three runs on five hits while striking out two in the no-decision.

For the Tigers, Brian Tallet picked up the win, going 6.0 innings, allowing only four runs on 11 hits while striking out seven. Weylin Guidry notched a save pitching three shutout innings in relief.

The Tigers only managed two extra base hits out of their 16 hits and did not hit a homerun.

The two teams met tomorrow for game two of the three-game series at Alex Box Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m. CT. Chad Pennington is expected to take the mound for the Sun Devils.
