No. 4 LSU Baseball Squeaks Out 6-5 Win Over Arizona State

No. 4 Louisiana State squeaked by No. 13 Arizona State to get a 6-5 win at Alex Box Stadium this afternoon before a crowd of 7,835. ASU drops to 11-4 on the year while the Tiger improve to 6-0.

ASU once again jumped out to the early lead, scoring three in the top of the second, but were unable to hold the lead. LSU scored two in the third and three in the fifth to go ahead but the Devils tied it up with a run in the fifth and sixth.

LSU centerfielder Cedric Harris hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Blair Barbier to take the one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh.

ASU outhit the Tiger 11 to seven in the loss while each team left nine men on base. ASU held the Fighting Tigers homerless for the second straight day.

Rightfielder Jonah Martin went 3-for-5 in the losing effort. Jeff Duncan and Casey Myers added two hits each. Myers also notched three RBI for the Devils. Designated hitter Brendan Hines hit his sixth homer of the season a towering solo shot to centerfield into the wind in the sixth inning.

Taking the loss on the mound was reliever Luke Field who allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work.

Tiger reliever Ben Saxon picked up the win going 6.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two. Weylin Guidry picked up his second save of the series pitching 1.1 innings of shutout ball.

ASU and LSU close out the three-game series tomorrow at Alex Box Stadium at 1 p.m. CT. Lefty Jon Switzer (3-0, 1.04 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Devils.
