TEMPE, Ariz. - The ninth-ranked Arizona State softball team (11-1) swept their two games today in the final day of the Louisville Slugger Classic Tournament at Farrington Stadium. In the first game, ASU shutout 17th ranked Michigan State 10-0 in five innings and defeated Illinois State 3-1. These two wins led the Devils to a 5-1 record for the tournament.
In the first game, ASU started off strong with three hits and three runs in the first inning. Jamie Hlebechuk and Erin Wardein went 2 for 2 at bat, and Nichole Thompson went 2 for 3 with three runs. Sara Kahler and Wardein led the team with two RBI's apiece. Sophomore pitcher Erica Beach (5-1) only allowed one hit and struck out four batters. Eight of the Devil players contributed at least one hit for the game and seven of the eight knocked in at least one RBI.
In the final game of the tournament, sophomore pitcher Kirsten Voak (6-0) struck out a season-high 11 batters. Beach hit 2 for 3 and knocked in all three of ASU's runs. Also hitting well for ASU was second baseman Missy Hixon and shortstop Kara Brun, who both went 2 for 4 at the plate. The Devils totaled nine hits for the game and had only one strike out.
